At the core, I am a portrait photographer. I simply love people – relating to them on a personal level and capturing images of ‘the person’. The vast majority of my work is portraiture; however, I do accept some commercial event work for select clients, offering both a change of pace and an additional means to pay the dreaded studio rent. So when the Hanover Theatre in Worcester called asking if I would photograph John Cleese with his fans in a post performance Meet & Greet, I saw a job that was not just something different but a rare opportunity to photograph a celebrity and one whom I’ve greatly admired since the first time I belly-laughed my way through Life of Brian. I rearranged my day so as not to miss the chance.
John Cleese is every bit as funny, personable, and TALL as you would imagine. Just to look at him and hear his voice brings to mind all the comic genius characters he has played – The Black Knight, Tim the Enchanter, Reg, Basil Fawlty, and Archie Leach are a few of my favorites. It was a thrill to meet him and witness him interact with his legions of adoring fans. But the greatest joy was seeing my favorite assistant get a comical kiss from the Minister of Silly Walk himself.
It was a great commercial gig and much more than just a job. I savored every moment of the evening.
